Mid-Atlantic Chapter Event
“Greet and Go” at 2014 AMWA Annual Conference
by Martin J Spiering, PhD, ELS
The AMWA-MAC “Greet & Go” dinner at this year's AMWA national conference had an impressive turnout of 20 chapter members merrily gathering at eighty3 in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. With tongue firmly in cheek, participants embarked on several weighty discussions. They included the age-old question of whether medical editors have what it takes to be writers or whether those who write, in their hearts of hearts, really want to be editors. Potential words to avoid in medical writing were put on trial (“impact” both as noun and verb was swiftly sent to the guillotine by a small ad hoc focus group), and a mathematical pop quiz involving the calculation of gratuity and tax on each person's charges was tackled without the (overt) use of any electronic devices.
Several participants agreed that the workings of the human brain are amazing, provided the brain belongs to a child—why the brains of adults are often less than functional will be discussed at another time at a watering hole to be determined.
For those of you interested in volunteering at the chapter level, please contact Cherie Dewar at firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to seeing you at our regional chapter conference on March 13, 2015, or at one of our upcoming local chapter meetings.
